How much deposit do I need to buy my first home in NZ?

The minimum is 5% with the Kāinga Ora First Home Loan (income caps apply). Most banks offer 10% deposit lending for first home buyers. Your KiwiSaver and First Home Grant both count towards your deposit.

Can I use my KiwiSaver to buy my first home?

Yes — after 3 years of KiwiSaver membership you can withdraw your full balance (minus $1,000). You may also be eligible for the First Home Grant of up to $10,000 per person. Jagdip calculates your exact entitlements.

What is the DTI rule and how does it affect me?

Since July 2024, NZ banks can only lend owner-occupiers up to 6 times their gross annual income. New builds are exempt. Jagdip works out your exact borrowing capacity before approaching any lender.

How long does mortgage pre-approval take?
